Business Unusual for the Birthday Industry

The following “Business Unusual” account is part of our new initiative, Collecting in Quarantine. With current mandates for all non-essential businesses to close, business is anything but usual in Maryland. In the Business Unusual series, MdHS is asking business employees, owners, customers, passers-by and neighborhood residents to visually share their experiences during the COVID-19 crisis.

The birthday industry, like many other businesses in Maryland during the pandemic, looks very different these days. Dinners at restaurants have been exchanged for quiet meals at home, and well-wishes from friends and loved ones are sent from afar. Birthday parties, usually consisting of food and entertainment, now consist of drive-by parades and contact-less gift exchanges. But while the celebrations have adapted, it is clear that the sentiments remain unchanged.
