FSK Lecture Series: Slavery and Emancipation: Archaeology, Landscapes, and African American Life in 19th century St. Mary’s City, Maryland

Feb 1st 6:00pm

Archaeologist Terry Brock will look at the lives of African Americans who were enslaved at St. Mary’s Manor during the mid-19th century, a plantation that once sat in the location of Maryland’s first capital. His talk will examine some of the archaeological investigations conducted by Historic St. Mary’s City on two former slave quarters that were occupied into the early 20th century, and how these buildings changed after Emancipation. Brock will also discuss how these buildings, and the lives of those living within them, fit into the larger context of slavery, the Civil War, and post-Emancipation Maryland.
