Biographical Note

Thomas Lewis

Thomas Lewis was born on March 17, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was educated at local schools, including Mount St. Joseph High School, where he graduated in 1958. He later enlisted in the National Guard, a decision he later explained as “a slow process of waking up to the problems of war.” After meeting the Catholic priest Philip Berrigan, Lewis began attending protest demonstrations where he sketched scenes of activism. His observations soon evolved into active participation, and he joined the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE) in 1964.

Three years later he protested as one the “Baltimore Four,” a group of activists who poured blood on draft files at the Baltimore Customs House as a statement against the Vietnam War. In 1968 Lewis and the other “Catonsville Nine” openly defied the government by burning A-1 military draft files. Despite being incarcerated numerous times, Lewis continued his activism, both through his artwork and demonstrations into his later years. In 2005 he was arrested at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. after protesting for an end to the genocide in Darfur. Lewis passed away at age 68 on April 4, 2008 from natural causes.
