Biographical Note

The Griffin, Murray, Studds, and Douty families primarily resided in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. John Roland Murray (1828-1921), son of Henry G. (b. 1802) and Liza Billups Murray (b. ca. 1804), married Mary Griffin (1837-1898) in 1856. John worked as a coach maker in Baltimore, Maryland. He and Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth Spicer Griffin, had three sons, George R. (1867-1892), James R. (b. ca. 1869), and John Harry Murray (1855-1932). Mary’s brother, William M. (b. ca. 1844), served in the Union Army during the Civil War, as a quartermaster sergeant for the Baltimore Battery, Maryland Light Artillery.

John Harry worked as a clerk in Baltimore and married Julia Truslow Tucker (d. ca. 1928-1932) in 1882. They had two children, Bessie Francene (1885-1979) and Carroll Harper Murray (1886-1956). Bessie married Walter Granville Studds in 1920, and had two children, Granville Murray (1921-1992) and Audrey Lee Studds (1924-2010). Bessie later married James Frederick Douty, Jr. (1877-1953).
