A sneak preview of “Paul Henderson: Photographing Morgan (1947–1955)”

Underbelly presents this sneak preview ahead of the opening of the Maryland Historical Society’s popular traveling exhibition of the work of photojournalist Paul Henderson.

Paul Henderson: Photographing Morgan (1947–1955) runs February 4 through March 27, 2016 at Morgan University’s James E. Lewis Museum of Art and is free and open to the public.

It’s thanks to Paul Henderson (1899-1988) hitting the bricks for decades with his camera and ladder in tow that so many incredible images of black life in Baltimore during the mid-20th century survive. His work is an invaluable visual record of the Civil Rights movement, post-WWII America, and everyday life in Maryland. While he may be best known as the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper’s first photographer—he started at the paper in 1929, Henderson spent a lot of time on the campus of Morgan State College from 1947 through 1955. This show, curated by Joe Tropea, is a celebration of Morgan State University’s history and another step in MdHS’s work of putting names to faces and places. Most of the 6,000 plus negatives in the Paul Henderson Photograph Collection lack identification of subjects, locations, and dates.
