Gallery 1:
Star of Bethlehem and Arborescent Chintz, c. 1835

Plain and printed cotton, chintz. Acc. 1957.80.1,
             Gift of Douglas L. Darnell.

The notation on the reverse of the quilt, "T.L. Darnall," identifies the recipient of this quilt. Thomas Lewis Darnall (1825-1908) came from a distinguished Maryland Catholic family whose members married other prominent Marylanders of their faith, including the Calverts and the Carrolls. Possibly, Lewis's wife, Adeline made this quilt before her marriage to Darnall in 1849-later adding his name.
