Gallery 1:
Pieced and Appliquéd Quilt, c. 1840

Plain and printed cotton, chintz. Acc. 1942.10.22, Gift of
            Miss Mattie M. Key.

Although the stars in this quilt are unrelated to our national anthem, coincidentally the quiltmaker Maria Louisa Key's husband was the second cousin of Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star-Spangled Banner. The original manuscript of the anthem is in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society.
