Ideas and Inspiration

The leaf pattern seen here and on David Crowl's quilt appears to be that of the Common Prickly Ash. This shrub indigenous to the eastern United States, is also called the "Toothache Tree" because its aromatic and bitter bark was chewed to numb pain and relieve toothaches. Like the representation in the quilt, the leaves turn bright red in the fall.
