Ideas and Inspiration

Still Life of Watermelon and Grapes,
Sarah Miriam Peale, 1820.
Acc. No. 1958.52.4.

Album quilters displayed their considerable appliqué skills in the intricate arrangement of fruit bowl assemblages. The choice of fondu, or shaded, fabrics to create the illusion of a pear's skin provides a still life realism. This same interest in realism can be seen in Sarah Miriam Peale's Still Life of Watermelon and Grapes painted in 1820.
