Early Maryland quilters chose designs they had seen on decorative objects in their homes - furniture, silver and ceramics. Two Baltimore- made early 19th - century tall case clocks in the Maryland Historical Society's collection exhibit similar grapevine and leaf motifs and reflect the details of the urn and swags found in the quilt.
