Digging Deeper

Baltimore album quilters included a number of references to the Mexican War in their work, a war that had a deep impact on Americans. Maryland volunteers participated in some of the heaviest fighting.

Both of these Baltimore album quilts contain squares commemorating heroes of the Mexican War. One square shows a monument to Major Samuel Ringgold, who died in the 1846 Battle of Palo Alto in Texas. His monument, which stood for a time in Baltimore, is draped with flags and sits in a wagon piled high with cannon balls and rifles. A square from Mrs. Josiah Goodman's quilt features Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker on horseback. This bold and dashing Marylander contributed to the design of the Colt six-shooter and died leading a company of the First U.S. Mounted Rifles in the final battle of the war.
