THE BEGINNINGS OF THE BALTIMORE
ALBUM QUILT


By the fourth decade of the 19th century, technological developments such as the steam engine and other aspects of industrialization, altered women's lives. Domestic tasks, such as spinning, weaving, and food processing, once accomplished in the home now more often took place in the factory. With more available time, middle-class women began to explore ways to refine and enrich their lives. The Baltimore album quilt evolved during this time of dramatic change.
