Gallery 3:
Baltimore Album Quilt, c. 1850

Plain and printed cotton, wool tweeds, wool and silk embroidery.
Acc. 1953.36.1, Gift of Mrs. Milford Nathan.
The bold colors, unusual fabrics, and exotic designs define the work of a woman described as "Designer III." Features of Designer III's style include thick overcast embroidery outlining the forms and utilitarian fabrics such as wool tweeds that make up her unusual birds, insects, and animals. Though the quilt was signed on the back by Mrs. Josiah Goodman, it is unclear whether she is "Designer III" or merely used this designer's work.
