Gallery 3:
Baltimore Album Quilt, 1852

Plain and printed cotton, chintz, silk, inking, Acc. 1991.17.1,
       The Middendorf Purchase Fund

Mary Simon immigrated to Baltimore from Bavaria in 1844. In her new home she created one of the most distinctive styles in the album quilt tradition. A sophisticated selection and manipulation of fabric and design details define her work. In this quilt, waving banners and flower stamens are inked, moiré silk provides the illusionary effect of bird's wings, and fabrics are placed one upon another to create dimension and depth.
