AFTER THE ALBUM QUILT:

THE HERITAGE CONTINUES

By the mid-1850s the making of Baltimore album quilts nearly ceased. Issues of states' rights and slavery dominated politics and popular concern, and by 1861 the Civil War consumed the minds of all Americans.

After this period quilters continued to draw on the Baltimore album quilt tradition by laying out their quilts in blocks, though now geometric forms such as eight-pointed stars or botanical subjects - with no particular relationship to Maryland - inhabit the squares. Elaborate quilting filled the spaces that verses and names once occupied.
