Annual Marion Brewington Essay Prize
The annual Marion Brewington Essay Prize encourages research in all aspects of maritime activities in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The prize is named for Marion Brewington to honor his dedication in preserving, documenting, and recording the maritime history of Chesapeake Bay.
The MdHS Maritime Committee awards $1,000 for the best qualifying manuscript on an aspect of the history of seafaring, fisheries, commerce, warfare, or recreation on Chesapeake Bay or its tributaries. Manuscripts should be submitted to the MdHS by December 31 for consideration for that year’s prize. The winning author’s name and essay title will be announced in national maritime periodicals.
Authors should follow the editorial guidelines as published in the University of Chicago Manual of Style. The essay’s length should be no more than 30 double-spaced typewritten pages, including endnotes. Authors should submit two paper copies of the manuscripts as well as a digital copy in Microsoft Word™ or Word Perfect™ on CD or floppy disk. If the manuscript deals with maritime art or artifacts, it should be accompanied by photographs of appropriate illustrations and descriptive materials. If these are available in the collections of the Maryland Historical Society, the society will provide a select number of illustrations.
Authors should submit manuscripts to:
