| Dr.
Bernard Harris, Sr., Elementary School, #250, opened to students in 1971.
The school was named after a local physician and member of the City School Board, Dr. Bernard Harris, Sr. Dr. Harris was a surgeon at Provident Hospital in Baltimore, and had his office at 1202 Caroline Street. His resided at 1207 Caroline Street, in the Oliver Community. The Oliver Community gets its name from Robert Oliver, a native of Belfast, Ireland, who came to Baltimore in the late 1700s and prospered here as a merchant. Robert Oliver purchased many parcels of land in the city, and on one of them he built a fine country home, which he named Green Mount. When Oliver died in 1834, the land was sold to the newly appointed Green Mount Cemetery, a non-profit trust for the creation of a city cemetery. The following links will take you to public
sites that will provide more information about the Oliver Community and the
people who have lived there over the years.
