Thank you for visiting the WEB site of the Maryland Historical Society Library. The information below will provide you with a brief description of the Library's reference and research services.

The Library is open to the public with a $4.00 entrance fee (free to members). The Library maintains two reading rooms:

    • The History and Genealogy Reading Room, open to the public Tuesday - Saturday 10 am - 4:30 pm, assists library patrons interested in using the library's collection of books, microfilm, atlases, card indexes, and reference collections on Maryland history and genealogy.
    • The Special Collections Reading Room, open to the public Tuesday - Friday 10 am - 4:30 pm (and every third Saturday of each month), assists library patrons interested in using the library's collections of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, prints, maps, broadsides, and printed ephemera.
You can contact the Library in various ways:
    • by email: library@mdhs.org
    • by telephone: 410.685.3750 (History & Genealogy only accepts phone reference calls Tues. - Fri. 10 am - 11:30 am)
    • by FAX: 410.385.2105
    • by letter: Reference Coordinator, Maryland Historical Society Library, 201 W. Monument Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
Due to the overwhelming number of requests that we receive each day through letters, telephone, FAX, and now email, we have limited our reference and research services. Library staff will provide reference services that are limited to a BRIEF inspection of library bibliographies, card catalogs, indexes, guides, inventories or finding aids. Reference requests that require lengthy use of multiple library reference sources and/or research and reading of the collections will incur research fees.

If after reading the above, you believe your research request falls into the category of fees and charges, we would appreciate you taking time now to fill out a research request form. Please provide us with the information asked on the forms available at the links below. If you wish to print off a PAPER COPY of the form and mail it to us, please click on this link. If you wish to pre-pay using your VISA, please click on this link and fill out the CHARGE FORM (then click on "Research Requests").
