Genealogy Resources

 

FILING CASE A    

A large collection of small groups of unpublished genealogical notes. These materials are indexed in the Library master list, the Genealogy Index, and stored in gray boxes on self-service shelves in the main reading room of the Library. They are alphabetically arranged by subject and family name.
 

DIELMAN-HAYWARD FILE

This file is made up of biographical material, usually copied or cut from Maryland newspapers.With over 400,000 names, it covers births, deaths, and marriages of Marylanders since 1800. Current entries are indexed in a computer database located in the main reading room.
 

CHURCH RECORD FILE

A guide to the locations of Maryland church records, covering all periods, all denominations, and all known repositories or records.
 

NORRIS HARRIS CHURCH REGISTER INDEX

Genealogical information from a part of the Library's extensive collection of church records has been copied fully and exactly in this card file. The cards are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the person involved. Other church records in the Library can be found in the Manuscript Collections.
 

GENEALOGICAL JOURNALS

The Library receives many genealogical journals, magazines, and periodicals. Some are shelved in the genealogy section of the bookstacks; others which are specific to certain geographical areas are located with the local history books for the area concerned. Please consult the library catalog for specific titles.
 

WILKINS FILE

This file provides an index for standard Maryland histories whose original indices were either incomplete or non-existent. Each pre-formatted card identifies names of Marylanders found in a variety of Maryland histories including, for example, Scharf's, etc.
 

VERTICAL FILE

Contains newspaper clippings on various aspects of Maryland life and history. Contains no biographical entries; such information will be found in the Dielman-Hayward File.
 

PASSANO HISTORIC STRUCTURES INDEX

This card index contains information on historic structures in Maryland arranged alphabetically by county, then by property name or address. Building information can also be found in the Vertical File.
