    Maryland History and Genealogy
    Resources and Services

The History and Genealogy Resources of the Maryland Historical Society Library contains over seventy-five thousand book titles, microfilm/fiche, indices and charts on the history of Maryland and its people.  The Library is open to the public for a nominal fee of $4.00/day and is free to anyone who wishes to pay for annual membership to the Society.

First-time visitors to the Library will find a variety of information on family history as well as a multitude of resources on genealogical research. The Department maintains hundreds of genealogies on Maryland families as well as all available census records (1790 through 1920), the Dielman-Hayward newspaper index of marriages and deaths in Maryland, ships passenger lists, Maryland newspapers, and an extensive index of Maryland church records births, baptisms and marriages.  In addition, the Passano Historic Structures Index assists those seeking information about particular buildings in Maryland; Revolutionary War militia lists, Oaths of Allegience indices and current volumes of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Patriot's Index are available to those searching for Revolutionary War soldiers; and those searching for Civil War ancestors can use the Library's collection of Union and Confederate rosters, service records and published reminisences of the veterans themselves.

If you cannot get to the Library to do your own research, the MHS provides this service also.  By completing a Research Request Form and enclosing your check or credit card information, your written requests will be answered within 6 to 8 weeks.  You can  call the library at 410-685-3750, Ext. 359, for one of these research forms.

The History and Genealogy Department is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM.  Other departments of the Library are available at other times.  If you are not a member of the MHS, the entry fee is $4.00.  Be sure to bring a pencil (pens are not permitted).  A photocopier is available to patrons for $.25/copy and a microfilm copier is also available for $.75/copy.  Certain rare or fragile items may not be photocopied.

Our department accepts brief, telephone inquiries from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM (Tuesday through Friday).
