2006-2007 Lord Baltimore Fellows

Applications for 2007-2008

Deadline: April 1, 2007

The Maryland Historical Society invites applications for its Research Fellowship program. The Society offers fellowships each year designed to promote scholarship in Maryland history and culture through research in its library and museum collections. Applications will be welcomed from independent scholars, graduate students, or university faculty in any discipline appropriate to its collections.

Between six and twelve Lord Baltimore Fellowships will be awarded.  These fellowships are non-stipendiary.  Fellows will be provided with office space, access to computers with Internet connections, office supplies, staff-level access to the library and museum (that is, access will be available for fellows from Monday through Saturday, not just during public hours), and a free staff parking permit.

The terms of a fellowship may be from one week to one year during the period from June 1, 2007, to May 31, 2008. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Society during their fellowship term, make use of the Society's collections in their research, and participate in the intellectual life of the Society. Fellows are encouraged to present their research-in-progress in informal presentations at the Society and to submit their work for possible publication in the Maryland Historical Magazine.

Founded in 1844, the Maryland Historical Society is Maryland's oldest historical repository. The H. Furlong Baldwin Library maintains 75,000 books, 230 serials, 4,000 microfilm, 5.1 million manuscripts, 800,000 photographs, 25,000 rare books and pamphlets, 1 million items of ephemera, 20,000 prints, over 10,000 maps and plats, and a large collection of genealogy and biographical indexes. It has notable holdings in 18th- and 19th-century family papers, 19th and 20th century business papers, World War II, medical history, and performing arts history.

The Society's Carey Center for Maryland Life is a material culture research center for the advancement of Maryland and Chesapeake regional history. The Museum, as part of this Center, contains over 250,000 objects that illuminate Maryland's past. They are presented in exhibitions including a major introduction to the state's past in "Looking for Liberty: An Overview of Maryland History," and in complementary exhibitions -- "Maryland Through the Artist's Eye" and "Furniture in Maryland Life" -- as well as through changing exhibitions in the temporary exhibition galleries.

Applications are due April 15, 2006; this is a postmark deadline. To apply, send a cover letter, a c.v. or resume, a 2-4 page summary of the planned research and how it fits into your overall research project, and the names and complete addresses of two references to:
