Radcliffe's (1877-1974) career from his work as an attorney with the
American Bonding Company in 1903 to his position as chairman of the
governing body of the Maryland Historical Society until 1965: correspond-
ence, meeting minutes, financial reports, and speeches concerning his
political career as United States Senator, 1934-46; association with the
Maryland Historical Society, 1912-74; his family; Eastern Shore property;
work with the Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland, the American
Bonding Company, the Grace Foundation Inc. of Taylor's Island (1950-
65), The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (1934-65), and the
Civil War Centennial Commission (1959-65); eighteen scrapbooks of
photographs and printed ephemera, ca. 1885-1972, reflecting his public
career, family, and student years at the Johns Hopkins University; fifty
volumes of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings of events in Rad-

his experiences in the War of 1812 with descriptions of the military
situation, reports of battles on the Niagara frontier, a rumor of an armistice
in 1814, and in 1828 about William Wirt's (1772-1834) life in Florida
including information on the health of his family and farming; journal of
Thomas Randall while on a government mission to Havana, September
to November 1824, about the operation of United States ships of war sent
to hunt and destroy pirate ships in the Gulf of Mexico; Thomas Randall's
account book and diary, 1821-37, giving descriptions of his family's life
and work in the Florida Territory; thirteen letters, 1827-33, primarily
from William Wirt to his daughter Laura Henrietta Wirt Randall (1803-

efforts to procure military land bounty compensation for his war service,

the defense of Fort Mifflin, 1777; a letterbook and receipt book of the

Records created by the provisional and state governments including the
proceedings of the Eastern Shore Branch of the Council of Safety, Novem-
ber-December 1775; oaths of fidelity, 1778; three journals of accounts for
the legislature, 1778-81; journal of the Commissioners for Preserving
Confiscated British Property, 1781-85; minutes of the Board of Patuxent
Associations, 1781; miscellaneous Loan Office papers, legislative petitions,

ROGERS JOURNALS, MS.701
Vol. 1 is an account (damaged) of the voyages of James Lloyd Rogers
(1827-1870) on the ship Stephen Lurman, Captain J. A. Conkling, from
May, 1846, sailing to the Far East; also a subsequent voyage on the
Powhatan, returning on the Lexington. The account is written under the
name of James L. Rogers and that of "Harry Greenwood; the Wanderer,'
presumably a nom de plume used by Rogers. Vol. 2 has part of two drafts
of the first voyage, apparently copies, with some alterations, from vol. 1,
signed and dated several times in 1846, and January 4, 1847 ('Homeward
Bound'). A list of American officials in the east is included. Rogers's second
voyage was made in 1854-1856.

Account book kept by John Ross (1696-1766), from 1735. Ross was Clerk
to the Council of Maryland, Mayor of Annapolis, and Naval Officer of the
Patuxent. The volume includes accounts with "High Sheriffs" of the various
counties of Maryland, "The Publick,' and Dr. Upton Scott. In 1764 the
handwriting changes, but later keeper of the accounts has not been identified.
