Two letters from Governor O'Conor (1896-1960) to Joseph D. Mish
about the appointment ofJ. H. Gambrill, Jr. as a member of the Maryland
State Game and Inland Fish Commission; five letters from O'Conor to
William Preston Lane, Jr. about the appointment of Gambrill; the rec-
ommendation to appoint J. Andrew Cohill as a substitute trial magistrate
of Washington County; a reply to an invitation to attend a Purple Heart
decoration.

Maryland, on business and general matters. Family letters to Benjamin

include tobacco trade, sale of Negro slaves.

ODEN, WEST, BOWIE COLLECTION, MS. 2380
Three related Maryland families. Oden papers: correspondence, 1780-
1830, of Benjamin Oden (1762-1836) about the sale of land and tobacco,
personal debts, loans, and creditors. West papers: correspondence, 1766-
90, of Stephen West, Jr. (I 727-90) about the sale of land and tobacco, and
strained relations between England and the American colonies just prior
to the Revolution. Bowie papers: general family correspondence and a
manumission document, 1840-70; an inventory of the goods and chattel
of George French; genealogical notes on the Claggett and Williams
families; a scrapbook maintained by Mildred Carter on farming, women,
social gatherings, and blacks in Maryland.

Letters concerning Joshua Johnson, a Negro portrait painter owned by the
Moale family. Indentures and legal papers of Maybury (Mayberry) Helm,
Sr. and Jr., c. 1765. Plats, bills of sale, and receipts concerning land in
Baltimore City and County, 1787-1836. Miscellaneous autographs, mainly
of Marylanders.

OLD TOWN MERCHANTS' AND MANUFACTURERS' ASSOCIATION MINUTE BOOKS, MS.627
Proceedings of organization of wholesale and retail merchants, formed to
promote the interests of East Baltimore; deal with problems involving
welfare of the people, including trade dollars, public libraries, horse cars,
"barking," street openings, pure food labels, Sunday observance, market
houses. Full data on excursions to Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, Atlantic
City, Jamestown. Vol. 3 includes copy of constitution of 1904.

Papers of Colonel Edward Oldham (d. 1798) include copies of deeds,
indentures and wills concerning his inheritance of Bohemia Manor, Cecil
County, formerly owned by Augustine Herrman. Several items relate to
the mortgage of Bohemia Manor held by Charles Carroll of Carrollton.

materials relating to the business affairs of Robert Oliver ( 1757-1834),
Baltimore merchant. Relate mainly to administration of Oliver's estate
(David Maulden Perine, administrator) with holdings in England, Ireland,
South America, Mexico, India, and Cuba. Include wills of Oliver, Roswell
Lyman Colt (1811-1856). Business correspondence of Oliver with Alex-
ander Baring, Nicholas Biddle, Richard Caton, R. M. Gibbes, Robert

Ledgers, letterbooks, daybooks and journals of the commercial activities of
Robert Oliver (1757-1834), first in partnership with Henry Thompson as
Oliver & Thompson, 1785-1796, then as Robert Oliver & Brothers, 1796-
1803, and Robert & John Oliver. Vols. 1-2, Oliver & Thompson daybook
and journal; remaining volumes include letterbooks, waste books, bills
payable and receivable, and notes payable, 1796-1834. The volumes provide
information on trade with England, Ireland, France, Holland, Germany,
the Baltic ports, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the East and West
Indies. Letterbooks have copies of correspondence with agents, ships' cap-
tains and others in these areas.

Papers of lawyer David M. Perine, agent for the administrators and
trustees of the Oliver family's estate: Robert Oliver (ca. 1759-1834) estate
and trusts he established for his daughters Emily 0. Gibbes (1805-70) and
Margaret 0. Colt (I 790-1856); a special trust for his sisters and illegitimate
sons of John Oliver; estate of Robert's brother-in-law, Robert M. Gibbes
(d. 1864).

ONEILL SCRAPBOOK, MS.1525
A scrapbook based on a questionnaire sent out by O'Neill's Department
Store, covering various aspects of Baltimore history and asking for a slogan
to describe the store and its place in the life of Baltimore. The questions
are illustrated by clippings and typed answers given by Mrs. William V.
Albaugh, compiler of the volume.

OREGON ACCOUNT BOOKS, MS.629
Workbook, 1851-1858, of the Oregon Furnace (founded 1837 and later
incorporated as the Ashland Iron Company); includes names of employees
and number of days worked by each. Account book, 1851-1858, of lime-
stone and pig iron hauled to and from the Oregon Iron Furnace. 12 vols.
of daybooks of Thomas Kurtz, manager of the Oregon Bank, 1872-1890,
listing sales of groceries and other commodities to customers. The Oregon
Iron Furnace was located at Cockeysville, Maryland.

Petition, November 21, 1859, to try to prevent the filling in of the harbor
basin, Baltimore. Menu of a dinner given by W. A. Marburg, December,
1904. Letter from Henry Clay to the John C. Orem Company, 1848. Letter
of Roger Brooke Taney to William West, 1831. Passports, memo book, and
two family bibles belonging to various members of the Orem family.

Volume of clippings describing the Oriole Festival in Baltimore to celebrate
the 250th anniversary of the original Maryland grant, 1882; also items

German Protestant Reformed Church of Baltimore: business and orga-
nizational records including the church's charter, constitution and by-
laws, church council minutes, financial statements, trustee and elder
election records, churchyard plats, and lists of churchyard plot owners;
membership lists, member removal lists, and registers of births, baptisms,
marriages, and deaths; a history of the church by Paul E. Holdcraft.

Volume of miscellaneous items, mainly newspaper clippings. Also includes
accounts for sums paid to various individuals and firms, especially for
personal items and household repairs. State of Maryland certificate appoint-
ing Oudesluys as Paymaster of the 2nd Regiment of Artillery, Maryland
Militia, August, 1846. Certificate of Oudesluys's membership of the Mary-

Account book of Richard Owen (1745-1822), Methodist minister and
teacher of writing and mathematics at St. John's College, Annapolis (from
1784). The accounts date from 1810 and show books and supplies pur-
chased by students at the college and at Owen's Easton Seminary.

hanna Railroad. Two letters concerning plots in Greenmount Cemetery,
1904, 1915, and letter, 1944, on removal of Cassard family bodies from the

OXFORD PORT OF ENTRY ACCOUNT BOOKS, MS.638
Account books of Oxford Port of Entry, Thomas and Samuel Cbamberlaine,
Collectors (Samuel being Naval Officer of Oxford). One volume, 1759-
1773, shows vessels entering the port, with data on type of vessel, cargo,
owner, master's name, tonnage, crew, number of guns, place and date
built, place and date registered, destination, home port. Two volumes, 1731-
1732, 1740-1742, 1747-1775, show fees received from masters of vessels
clearing for other ports. The second of these volumes has a list of bonds
taken, 1757-1763, and copies of commissions as Collector and Naval Officer.
