GARRETT, ROBERT, PAPERS, MS.979
Collection provides detailed information on every phase of business of
Robert Garrett, Jr., President of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and of the
railroad itself. Includes letterbooks, copies of cablegrams, incoming cor-
respondence from bankers, B. & 0. officers and friends. Many miscellaneous
stock circulars, pamphlets, etc. Material on the John W. Garrett estate and
other properties. Earliest items are correspondence of John W. Garrett and
his brother, Henry, concerning the railroad and other topics. Major groups
of papers include: 1) Financial, especially concerning efforts by an eastern
banking syndicate to buy into the company. 2) The dispute of the B. & 0.
with the Western Union Telegraph Company over control of the B. & O.'s
system of telegraph lines. 3) The unsuccessful attempt of the B. & 0. to
acquire control of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad. 4)
Rate wars and agreements among the major eastern trunk-line railroads.
Other corporations than the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad that are substan-
tially represented in this collection include the Western Union Telegraph
Company, Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, Central Railroad of
New Jersey. Letters to and from the House of Morgan and its affiliates, Jay
Gould, Cyrus W. Field, J. W. Mackay, F. B. Gowen, Samuel Sloan, John
King, Jr., Samuel Spencer, John K. Cowen, C. F. Mayer, and prominent
Marylanders such as Arthur Pue Gorman, Charles J. M. Gwinn, Ferdinand

Manuscript memoir of Robert Gilmor, Sr. (1748-1822) by his son,
Robert Gilmor, Jr.: mentions national politics, the Revolution, life in
Philadelphia and Baltimore, commerce, relations between the United
States and Europe (especially England and France); includes a watercolor
of "Beech Hill," the Gilmor estate, and photographs of "Glen Ellen," the
house built by Robert Gilmor, Jr., in 1834; letters of Jefferson Davis
(1871), recommendation for Robert Gilmor, Sr. to establish a mercantile
house (1 782), and Albert Gallatin describing the firm of Robert Gilmor,
Sr. in Baltimore.
Some of this biography was published in 1840 by Robert Gilmor, Jr.,
for the private use of his family. The Peabody Library owns a copy of this
volume and a photocopy of it is available in the Society's library.

Ledger of store at Middletown, Delaware, kept by John Ginn, mainly
showing sale of cloth, staple foods, etc., 1825-1851. Later accounts in the
same volume are those of William T. Sheldon at Cecilton, Maryland, with
sums received and spent. Newspaper clippings from Cecil Democrat
include list of voters for 1870 and miscellaneous advertisements.

Volume used by various members of the Gist family, not all of whom can
be clearly identified. Includes Joseph Gist's personal financial accounts and
business records as a weaver, c. 1775, poetry, proverbs, family records;
indentures and documents copied, 1761-1794. Entries by William Gist, son
of Joseph, while still a child, 1783-calligraphy practice. Other entries by
an unidentified third party in a different hand, etc., including geometry,
two sections of surveying records, and an index to land surveyed, 1695-
1765. The name John Elder Gist appears in the volume but his name cannot
be connected with any specific entries (lived 1761-1804).
