BALDERSTON,  LUCY HOLMES,  ALBUM,   MS. 1796
Album of poetry and drawings owned by Lucy Holmes Balderston (d.
1881): poems to Lucy Balderston about love, friendship, death, humility,
and hope; obscure authors except for Edgar Allan Poe. Poe poem headed
"Original," later known under the title "Alone," in his handwriting.
Another untitled poem of three stanzas-"By W. H. Poe, copied at his
request by E. A. Poe." Both believed to have been written about 1829.
The Poe manuscripts have been photocopied and are with the manu-
script collection. The original album is in the Rare Book Room of the
Society.

Thousands of incoming letters and telegrams pertaining to all phases of
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad history from 1859-1880: finance, traffic, rail-
road competition and combination, labor, legal questions (purchase or
condensation of property, etc.), politics (items showing B. & 0. lobbying
for or against bills on railroads in Congress and in various states-Maryland,
West Virginia, Ohio), management and operation, plant and equipment,
relations with subsidiary railroad, steamship, and express companies. Letter-
press copies or MS. drafts of outgoing correspondence from John W. Gar-
rett and other leading B. & 0. officers, pertaining to the same subjects.
Hundreds of interoffice memoranda to Garrett from his subordinates,
often with pencilled notations by Garrett in the margin. Numerous long,
detailed letters between Garrett and his two vice-presidents during the
1870s, John King, Jr., and William Keyser, full of discussions of
railroad rate wars and conferences, contracts with shippers, the condi-
tion of the road, policy and management questions, etc. Hundreds
of routine railroad items: newspaper clippings, statistical reports and
tables, drafts of Garretes speeches and remarks to B. & 0. board meetings,
drafts of contracts, agreements, briefs, etc., routine reports from B. & 0.
agents and other officers, correspondence pertaining to claims against the
company, letters requesting free passes or information, pamphlets containing
Garrett speeches, testimony of B. & 0. officers before Congress or state
legislatures, copies of bills and laws and legal opinions affecting the com-
pany. Items of particular importance include: 1) Several hundred letters and
telegrams detailing the B. & O.'s activity during the CiA War; troop move.
ments, Confederate destruction of railroad property, efforts to keep the
railroad open and in repair, correspondence with Union generals and
Government officials. 2) Several dozen copies of letters and telegrams relat-
ing to the railroad strikes of 1877. 3) Correspondence between King,
Keyser, and Garrett, setting out company strategy and policy concerning
rate wars, pooling agreements, efforts to secure larger measures of the oil,
grain, livestock coal, and other important traffic, general management of
the road and its subsidiaries, political and legal questions, etc. Among the
corporations that figure more or less prominently in the correspondence are
the Standard Oil Company, the House of Morgan, the Pennsylvania, New
York Central, Erie, Wabash, and Reading Railroads, the Grand Trunk Rail-
way, the North German Lloyd and Allan steamship lines, the Western
Union Telegraph Company, the Adams Express Company, and dozens of
eastern, southern and western railroad companies. Occasional important
letters to and from the following business and railroad leaders: J. P. Morgan,
Junius S. Morgan, Jay Could, William H. Vanderbilt, J. Edgar Thomson,
Thomas A. Scott, Alexander J. Cassatt, Collis P. Huntington, Franklin B.
Gowen, A. J. Drexel, Samuel Sloan, Albert Fink, and many others, includ-
ing the leading officials of Standard Oil and every important railroad serv-
ing the Atlantic Coast and Middle West.

Eighteen bound volumes of letterbooks, each indexed by addressee, of
the outgoing correspondence from the office of the president of the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, written by or for President John W. Garrett
(1820-84) to political and military leaders, officials of other railroad
companies, and Baltimore and Ohio officials and departments: daily
operational and managerial concerns of the railroad through the Civil
War years with comments on John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry,
Virginia; the destruction and theft of railroad property; concern for the
safety of railroad employees and construction crews from Confederate
troops, guerilla bands, and intoxicated Union soldiers; conflicting pressures
for the delivery of troops, arms, mail, and coal and efficient passenger and
freight service; a letter to President Abraham Lincoln promising delivery
of gas coal to the Washington Gas Light Company, but pleading the
conflicting demands of military and other pressures for services; comments
by Garrett for good management practices as he dealt with mechanical
failures, fires, accidents, employee efficiency, negligence, misconduct,

Davis to John W. Garrett on the amount of equipment collected in
Winchester, Virginia in conjunction with the expenses; letters from Joshua
Riggles to John W. Garrett and Hugh Rice as to the location of the
engines and machinery after the war; miscellaneous material including
receipts from Edward Keith's salary, memos to John W. Garrett, a letter
