ADAMS EXPRESS COMPANY RECORDS, MS. 1877.2
Two letterbooks, 1860s-70s, of Samuel Moor Shoemaker (1821-84), an
owner and officeholder in the Adams Express Company, with letters to
Adams Express Company agents, other businessmen, his partner, E. S.
Sanford, Henry Sanford, Harrison Phoebus, and Andrew Carnegie. Letters
comment on problems of the company, debts owed to Shoemaker, invest-
ments by Shoemaker and the company, and the 1873 financial panic.
Other records: a small group of loose letters and telegrams to Shoemaker
from company agents; bills, receipts, and vouchers, 1865-66.

Biographical sketch of Sir Thomas Adams copied by George Lynn-Lachlan
Davis, 1860, from Biographia Britannica. Memoranda from Davis family

ing the Claggett, Dorsey, Ridgely, and Chew families-their genealogies
and coats of arms. Eight loose clippings and notes about Bishop Claggett

Two nearly identical copies of a biographical sketch by George Lynn-
Lachlan Davis of his ancestor, Sir Thomas Adams. One volume was a copy
made for the author's nephew, Ignatius Thomas Davis, and the other was
made for Albert Ritchie, also a nephew. Original sent as a gift to the Prince
of Wales, 1860.

ADAMS WHITE LEAD COMPANY RECORD BOOKS, MS.1608
Record book, 1873-1885, and account book, 1873-1881, of the Adams White
Lead Company, Baltimore. Record book has minutes of meetings of sub-
scribers, directors, etc.; statement of the condition of the company, 1884;
actions at the death, 1884, of S. M. Shoemaker, principal stockholder, when
the patent rights were transferred to his son to secure the father's investment
in the company. List of lead manufacturers with addresses, used for advertis-
ing purposes. Letter to the Little Paint and Oil Company, Little Rock,
Arkansas, asking them to consider purchase of the company, and giving as
reason for sale the death of S. M. Shoemaker, owner of two-thirds of the
company and its patents.

ARCHER COLLECTION, MS.33
Letters from James J. Archer (1817-1864) of Rock Run, Harford County,
to his family. Subjects include his experiences in the Mexican War, Indian
campaigns in Washington Territory, with descriptions of frontier life and
politics. Many references to well-known army officers, specific campaigns
and raids, the Northwest Boundary Survey, etc. Later group of letters is of
the Civil War period, when Archer served as a Confederate Brigadier Gen-
eral, and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg. Letters
while a prisoner of war on Johnson's Island, Ohio, 1863-1864, the final items
written within a week of Archer's death due to hardships suffered as a
prisoner.

Copies of five documents relating to Commodore John Henry Aulick's expe-
dition to procure a treaty from the Emperor of Japan-President Fillmore's
letter to the Emperor; Aulick's commission; his instructions from Secretary
of State Daniel Webster; a letter from Webster to Secretary of the Navy
William A. Graham, and George L.-L. Davis's paper on The Origin of the
late Japan Expedition. Aulick's instructions antedated Perry's but he was
recalled and Perry sent instead.
