On March 1, 1866, the Harmony Circle gathered in the New Assembly Rooms
for a masked ball. Setting aside fashionable dress, ball-goers appeared
in elaborate and imaginative costume, displaying a delight in puns and
topical allusions. Here, "Andy Johnson's Tailor" sits on the table at center,
"patching up the Union" by sewing the names of northern and southern states
on a cloth. To the right, the Freidman family arrives as the Freedmen's
Bureau, labeled "No North, No South, or any other Man for President."
Two men dressed as a horse pull a mock trolley car of the newly established
Druid Hill Park line; Noah seems about to disappear below his ark. Musicians
play on and above the bunting-draped stage joined by dancing revelers and
what appears to be a minstrel band.
