Development Coordinator

Deputy Director for Development

The Maryland Historical Society, a 501 (c) 3 corporation, is the state’s oldest continually operating cultural institution. It annually serves more than 125,000 people, with educational programs based on the largest collection of documents, publications and decorative arts relating to Maryland. The society has a membership of approximately 4000 and is served by a staff of 50 and more than 100 volunteers. The current operating budget of the society is $4 million.

The Society is recruiting for the position of Deputy Director for Development to work with the Director, Board of Trustees and the staff management team to raise public and private resources and funds necessary for the operation of the organization. This position serves as the chief development officer overseeing all fundraising, community outreach, special events and public relations/marketing staffing and activities.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Membership retention and acquisition;
• Annual fund campaign (current goal of $ 1 million) including drafting direct mail appeals, supporting materials and response mechanisms;
• Special events and fundraising activities, including supervision of related staffing, volunteers and event logistics as necessary;
• Processing of gifts and related donor acknowledgements;
• Grant applications, conducting prospect research to identify and solicit potential new support;
• Coordinate volunteer activities with other division heads;
• Supervise staff of five, including public relations and marketing functions;
• Preparation and implementation of a $20 million endowment campaign (2008-2012)
• Departmental budget.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Certification desirable.

Experience/Skill Requirements

• Minimum three years experience in planning and management of fundraising and success at raising private monies for non profit service sector;
• Experience in supervision of staff and volunteers;
• Proven record of effective major gift and grant solicitation;
• Excellent writing and editing skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an organization;
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task, be organized and flexible, meet deadlines and prioritize job responsibilities.

Salary

Commensurate with experience. Compensation package includes performance bonus, health insurance and other benefits.

Museum Teacher

The Maryland Historical Society seeks part-time paid Museum Teachers to deliver hands-on on and offsite school programs in a history museum or classroom setting.  Ideal candidate will have interest in history and experience working with students from all backgrounds and ability levels.  Hours will vary.  Bachelor's degree and reliable transportation required.  Must be available Wednesday through Friday during school hours.
