About the Mellon Photograph Cataloging Project
What is the Vertical File?
Libraries use the term vertical file to describe collections of photographs,
clippings, etc. arranged by subject matter and
housed in filing cabinets. Unlike our catalogued photographs, those
in the vertical file are not arranged in collections by
source, or assigned catalog numbers.
At MdHS, our photograph vertical file is arranged in two sections: the Subject Vertical File, and the Portraits Vertical File. The total number of items contained in both Vertical Files is 23,151. That includes 16,257 photoprints and 6,894 negatives.
This finding aid deals with photographs arranged by subject in a hierarchy
that is alphabetical, geographical, and chronological.
Browse these web pages or use the
Search
Engine to locate specific subjects.
In some cases, dates do not indicate when the photographs were created, but may represent the date of the original item in the case of a reproduction photograph of artwork, or, in some cases, a date related to the origin of the subject.
A separate finding aid deals with Portraits of Individuals and Groups. Click here to see Portraits Vertical File finding aid.
