Regarding Brightwood Farm Diary:

It appears that the beginning of this diary was written by William Steiger, and the second portion is in his wife Hannah's hand. The diary covers the years 1865-1893, but the bulk of entries fall in the years 1866-1868 and 1884-1893.

William's portion of the diary (1866-1868) provides some daily records of events on the farm: who came and went, what animals gave birth, which fields he cultivated, etc. He has many diagrams of planting methods and patterns of crop arrangement, as well as his plans for certain orchards on his property.

Hannah begins her entries into the farm journal (1884-1893) with January 1, 1884's entry, Assumed entire control of the farm. The bulk of 1884's entries involve cash accounts and record keeping for the farm. Entries for the years 1891-1893 contain records of events like visitors, sicknesses, and deaths. There are a few references to details of plantings, but the bulk of agricultural information is found in the section in William's hand.
