McCormick, Rev. Leo Joseph
Papers 1632-ca.1940
Scope and Content
The McCormick Education Notes represent Rev. Leo J. McCormick's dissertation research on the history of church-state relations in Maryland education. The collection consists of three sections devised by McCormick: private secondary schools, general public and private secondary school information, and colleges and universities. Much of the information provided by the notes was not published in Church-State Relationships in in MHS Library MLC 112.M13 Education in Maryland, McCormick's adaptation of his dissertation.
The first section contains individual groupings of notes concerning individual private institutions. Each grouping follows a chronological arrangement according to an arbitrary date assigned by McCormick. Entries detail information regarding school buildings, incorporations, trustees, report publications, teachers, notable events, and general history. The notes are extracted from printed sources such as Scharf's histories, Laws of Maryland, annual school reports, and newspapers. For those schools noted, see listing.
The section dealing with general public and private school information lacks the definition and precision of the first section. The material itself deals with broad concepts, issues, and events pertaining to Maryland education in the nineteenth century, especially legislative activity. There is no breakdown by institution; items instead follow a rough chronological arrangement. There are three overlapping chronological series ranging from 1797 to 1909 relating to public schools, one of which deals extensively with the Kerney School Bill, 1852-1853. A brief chronological series, 1776-1900, deals with private schools.
Maryland colleges and universities are the subject of the final section. The material is similar to the first section both in information provided and in method of arrangement. Dates spanned are from 1784 to 1920. This section is less extensive than are the other two, but several institutions are covered in significant detail. For colleges and universities noted, see listing.
