Biographical Note

Louis August Moyer Krause was born December 14, 1896 in Baltimore and attended high school at City College. He earned his M.D. from the University of Maryland in 1917, just as the United States was becoming involved in World War I. For the next two years, he was a military surgeon in the Army Medical Corps at field hospitals in France and occupied areas of Germany. He also served in World War II, working at Lawson Hospital in Atlanta and Camp Butner in North Carolina. In his civilian life, Krause enjoyed a long career as physician and teacher in his native city. He was Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Maryland and Chief of Medical Services at Lutheran Hospital. He was also a consultant to many Baltimore City hospitals, including Provident Hospital. In addition to his medical work, Krause pursued an interest in Middle Eastern languages and history, making trips to the Arabian Peninsula and other countries in the region. At home, he was in much demand as a public speaker for commencements and many other occasions, including radio and television shows. As a member of Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland (Med Chi), Krause served as chairman of the Library and History Committee and commissioned a survey of the historical collection there. Eventually Med Chi established a rare book reading room in his memory, dedicated in 1988. The contents of that collection are now at the Maryland Historical Society. Krause remained unmarried and lived with his sister Louise Krause until his death on July 27, 1975.
