History
The Julius Anderson Photograph Collection consists of a couple hundred photographs of historic Baltimore buildings photographed in ca. 1920-1930. Many of the buildings have since been demolished but some remain standing and have been repurposed. The photographers of each photograph are unknown and the purpose of the photographs is unknown as well.
Collection Origin
The collection was acquired by Julius Anderson and donated to the Baltimore City Life Museum in 1994 and 1995.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of 229 photographic prints and one photographic souvenir booklet. The subjects consist of Baltimore buildings, businesses, piers, schools and colleges, hospitals, fraternal organizations meeting places, film and burlesque theaters, banks, churches and synagogues, street scenes, houses, monuments, City Jail, clubs, city government buildings, clothing companies, Druid Hill Park and zoo, and much more. Most photographs are exterior shots.
Arrangement
The photographs arrived pre-arranged and numbered. There were two donations by Mr. Anderson, one in 1994 and one in 1995. Each collection begins with either a 1994 number or 1995 number, indicating the date of which the donation was given. The two collections were donated by the same person and therefore are considered one collection.
