History

Robert Wier (b. ca. 1846) married Sarah Frances (Fannie) Cushing in Baltimore in 1872. Their daughter Edith (b. 1873) married Martin Houseworth Wayland of Orange, Va. in 1897, and her son was Robert Wier Wayland (b. 1898). In 1900, Robert Wier lived at 2123 St. Paul St. and the Wayland family lived at 1302 Linden Ave. Robert Wier was involved in outreach to the Baltimore Chinese-American community on behalf of Northminster Presbyterian Church, and thus befriended the Hom family, headed by Henry Hom who operated a business on Park Ave. near Saratoga St.

The Wier family came to Maryland from Ireland. Robert Wier (1811-1861) was a ship chandler who married Eliza J. Johnson (1822-1872) in 1841. In the 1850 Census, their children were listed as Florence, Isabel, Robert, Charles, and Mary, and three more children were born in the 1850s. Eliza Johnson Wier’s mother, Eliza Jane Green Johnson (ca. 1800-1888) was the wife of Capt. Charles Johnson (d. 1829, in the West Indies), who was born in the Isle of Man and raised in France before coming to Baltimore.

The Cushings were an old Baltimore family, several members of which were stationers and booksellers during the 19th century. Fannie Cushing was the daughter of David Cushing (1811-1875) and Catherine Jane McClellan Cushing (1812-1895), who married in 1834.

Note: Some names associated with this collection vary in spelling among sources. Wier is sometimes spelled Weir, but the correct spelling is Wier. Edmonds is sometimes spelled Edmands or Edmunds, which may be different names, variations over time in the family’s spelling of their name, or just typographical and transcription errors; in this case it isn’t clear that one spelling is correct.
