Scope and Content

The collection contains account books related to the personal and business finances of the Cheston and Chew families. The Bank of Baltimore account book records the payments made by the firm, Chew and Cheston, a business partnership between James Cheston, Jr. and John Chew. The Cheston family account book enumerates the daily expenses incurred by individual family members for household items, such as food and fabric. The Cheston Galloway account book includes the costs of the building of the ship, “James Cheston,” sales of goods, such as candles and pitch, as well as other related business notes and expenses.

The materials are ordered chronologically. Loose documents found between the pages of the account books were removed to separate folders. The pages they were found between are noted on the folders.
