History

Isaac Coriell (d. 1882) was a contractor, and Alvin Coriell (d. 1904) was a lumber merchant. Alvin married Mary Lawrence Coriell, and one of their sons was Dr. Louis Duncan Coriell (1878-1953), a dentist. In the 1860s, Isaac and Alvin both lived at 631 W. Lombard St.

Lewis M. Bower was a butcher listed at the same address as the Coriells in 1865. He married Mary Ellen Coriell in 1862, and they later moved to a home at 494 Saratoga St., while Bower did business at 40 Centre St. and at the Lexington and Hanover Markets. After Lewis died in ca. 1882, Mary Ellen Coriell Bower moved to 49 N. Poppleton St., and worked as a dressmaker.

Katherine Coriell (1875-1936) married George E. Hardy (1868-1931), George E. Hardy, Jr. (d. 1980) was their son, and their daughters were Katherine, Mary, and Clare. At different times, the family lived in the Mt. Vernon area and in Roland Park. The elder George E. Hardy was a prominent dentist and medical professor who came to Baltimore from Lunenberg Co., Va. at age 20, then graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (1888) and from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1889). He soon became a clinical instructor at the dental college, and was later appointed professor of physicology, which post he held until 1923.

George E. Hardy, Jr. also became a dentist, and practiced for 44 years, mainly at the Medical Arts Building in Baltimore. He had attended City College, graduated from the Johns Hopkins University in 1923, and from dental school in 1926. He married Elizabeth Scarlett.

7 uncased photographs are housed in 1 folder along with 3 photographs which are framed but not cased. The 18 cased photographs are individually wrapped and in variable arrangement within the box. Until further arrangement can be done, the only way to match objects to the inventory listings is to compare dimensions and description of the photo cases.
