Scope and Content Notes
Collection consists mainly of correspondence written by Mendes I. Cohen (1796-1879) while on his protracted travels to Great Britain, Europe, Asia Minor, the Middle East, and Norther Africa. The letters, dating from October 1829 through August 1835, are directed to family members -- mainly his mother Judith Solomon Cohen, and his brothers David, Jacob and Benjamin. The letters present an in-depth account of the countries and cities visited by Cohen. As an astute observer, Cohen described his daily travels, his encounters with people, his opinions on architecture, the roads the seas, and his thoughts on the political, social and economic climate of the areas in which he lived. His travels took him to cities such as Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, Paris, Geneva, Hamburg, Berlin, Rome, Florence, Athens, Constantinople, Smyina, Beirut, Cairo, Jerusalem, Alexandria, and Brussels.
The collection also includes journals kept by Mendes I. Cohen dating from 1829-1833. Some of them contain lists of arrival and departure dates and places visited. Others are language journals listing important words and phrases in English with their foreign counterparts. The 1832 journal is an account of Cohen's trip up the Nile and his journey back to Cairo. [Also includes a catalog of Egyptian antiquities owned and collected by Cohen.]
