Abstract | Approximately 270 letters from James J. Archer of "Rock Run", Harford County to his family. Experiences as army officer during the Mexican War and in Indian campaigns in Washington Territory, 1855-61. Latter group describes frontier life and politics of Indian campaigns. Many references made to later famed army officers, troop dispositions, specific campaigns and raids, the Northwest Boundary Survey, etc. Included also are letters from Civil War period, when Archer served as a Confederate brigadier general. Wounded and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, Archer wrote a series of letters while prisoner of war at Johnson's Island in Sandusky, OH (1863-64). Final letters written after his exchange, within a week of his death due to hardships endured while prisoner of war. In collection is also various correspondences between other Archer family members.
