MdHS Painting Collection

Over 1,500 images of MdHS paintings dating from the 17th century to the present are accessible on Maryland ArtSource , a website developed to illuminate Maryland's cultural heritage for anyone interested in Maryland art, artists and cultural institutions. By browsing the MdHS's paintings by date, viewing collection highlights or searching by subject, title, artist or date, visitors to the MdHS painting collection will be able to experience aspects of Maryland's history through portraits, landscapes and views of everyday life.

This project was made possible in part by the Baltimore Art Research Outreach Consortium (BAROC). A few years ago, library professionals from Baltimore's leading cultural and educational institutions, including the MdHS, organized BAROC with the goal of pooling resources to help answer the many reference questions they got from users about Maryland art and to give users access to on-line catalogs of the books at the different museums and libraries involved. BAROC has achieved its initial goals in large part through the development of the Maryland ArtSource website, which provides information about regional artists, access to on-line art collections, institution information and links to BAROC partners' library catalogs.

Funding for the digitization and cataloging of the MdHS painting collection provided through a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.
Major funding for Maryland ArtSource provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Other generous supporters include the ALH Foundation, Inc., The William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund, and the France-Merrick Foundation.
