This massive newel post formed part of a grand interior stairway
in the Maryland Telephone Company building. A rival phone company,
the Chesapeake and Potomac, acquired the former company and occupied
the building beginning in 1907. It now houses the Office of the
Public Defender. Renovations to the building interior eliminated
the stairway as well as other architectural detail.
