Permission
To Publish and Citation Style:
Permission
to examine manuscripts and photographs is not an authorization to
publish them. Usually, the copyright to materials is owned by the
Society, a private individual, or an organization. In order to protect
those rights, the Society has established specific policies and
procedures for you to follow.
Permission
to Publish Photographs
Permission
to publish photographs must be obtained from the Publications Division's
Photo Services Department. The webpage for Photo Services
at http://www.mdhs.org/explore/image.html
includes a price list and an online order form (scroll down the
form for the section on permission to publish).
Permission
to Publish Manuscripts and Archives
Permission
to publish (which will ordinarily be granted) must be obtained in
writing from the Special Collections Librarian. We ask in
exchange that we receive a copy of the finished work.
In giving permission to publish a manuscript, the Maryland Historical
Society does not surrender its own right thereafter to publish the
manuscript or to grant permission to others to publish it; nor does
the Society assume any responsibility for infringement of copyright
or of literary or publication rights to the manuscript held by others.
For
permission to publish, please write to:
Special
Collections Librarian
Maryland Historical Society
201 W. Monument Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
Please
state in your inquiry that authorization is requested to publish
the following excerpts from the manuscript collections indicated
(attach additional pages if necessary) and then list the excerpts.
Please give precise information on the materials you wish to publish
and the publication in which they are to appear. Quotations must
appear in context on this form, or you may attach copies of the
pages containing them. The citations should follow a certain format
depending upon the collection cited. Examples of these suggested
citations are given below.
Suggestions
for Citing Materials
The citation format outlined below is strongly recommended for citation
from materials found in our holdings. Publishers, professional journals,
and graduate faculties all prescribe their own style, but we ask
at a minimum that identification consist of the name of the collection,
the collection number, and the name of the repository, as below:
Name of Collection, Collection number, Maryland Historical Society.
