Rules and Policies:
APPLICABLE
THROUGHOUT THE LIBRARY
1)
Items Allowed in the Reading Rooms
- Laptops
- Research
materials in open folders or notebooks
- Pencils
- Pagers
and cellphones (if kept inaudible)-- we do ask that you be considerate
of other researchers
- Change
for the copiers
- Sweaters
and jackets normally worn indoors
2)
Items NOT Allowed in the Reading Rooms
- Purses, briefcases, computer cases, backpacks
- Zippered notebooks, closed folders, envelopes
- Umbrellas and outerwear
- Pens, markers, lipstick, chewing gum, food, drink & other items
potentially damaging to the collection
- Personal copiers, digital scanners & cameras
3) Lockers and coat racks are provided for patron convenience.
Only pencils or laptops may be used for taking notes. Pencils are
available at the library reception desk.
4) No marks may be added to or erased from any library materials.

Patrons should preserve the existing order and arrangement of all
materials. Errors in filing or labeling should be reported to the
staff.
6)
Readers will be asked to use microfilm or other reproductions where
such editions exist.
7)
Young children (age 7 and under) are not permitted in the reading
rooms, out of consideration for other researchers.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR SPECIAL COLLECTIONS:

Readers may request up to 3 boxes/collections at a time. Please
submit 1 request card for each collection you wish to consult. Requests
for retrieval will be accepted until 4 PM. Patrons also may email
requests ahead of time to

Manuscripts must be placed flat on the tables, not held in your
hands or on your lap. No object may be laid on top of materials.
Note paper, note cards and laptops must be used on the table top
next to items.
10)
Special collections are to be used in the McIlvain Special Collections
Reading Room only. No materials are to be removed for any reason
without permission of the Special Collections Librarian.

We ask that all researchers be acutely and ardently aware of the
historical value of the Library’s collections and that they
be committed to the preservation and protection of these materials
for future generations. Please note that the Library is monitored
by electronic surveillance and roving staff. Theft or defacement
of collection material will be prosecuted to the fullest extent
of the law.
