Prizes
Two genealogy prizes, the Sumner
A. Parker Prize and the Norris Harris Prize, are awarded annually
by the Maryland Historical Society for the best publication concerning
a Maryland family and the best publication of Maryland genealogical
source records, respectively. Winners for the previous year are
announced at the MdHS's annual meeting in June.

Sumner A. Parker
Prize
The Sumner A. Parker Prize, a monetary prize of $100, was established
by Dudrea Wagner Parker, a well-known art collector and influential
cultural figure in the Baltimore area. Mrs. Parker presented the
Maryland Historical Society with a monetary bequest in memory of
her late husband, Sumner A. Parker, the proceeds of which provide
a prize awarded annually for the best genealogical work concerning
either a Maryland family or a family originating in Maryland.
Criteria for inclusion
1. Each entry must be in published format.
2. Publications of the Press at the Maryland Historical Society
are not eligible for inclusion in the contest.
3. Entries must be documented. References to sources used should
be properly cited.
4. Each entry must include an every-name index.
5. Entries will be judged on quality of content, scope and organization
of material, and clarity of presentation.
6. The decision of the judges will be final.
7. Entries for the contest for any given year must be mailed no
later than December 31 of that year to the Sumner A. Parker Prize
Contest, Maryland Historical Society, 201 West Monument Street,
Baltimore, MD, 21201.
8. Each entry becomes the property of the Maryland Historical Society
and is placed in the H. Furlong Baldwin Library. Publication rights
and/or copyright remain with the author or compiler.
Norris
Harris Prize
The Norris Harris Prize, a monetary prize of $100, was established
by Winifred Mitchell Harris, an avid genealogist and lineage specialist.
Mrs. Harris presented the Maryland Historical Society with a monetary
bequest in memory of her late husband, Norris Harris (also a genealogist),
the proceeds of which provide a prize awarded annually for the best
compilation of genealogical source records of Maryland.
Criteria for inclusion
1. Each entry must be in published format.
2. Publications of the Press at the Maryland Historical Society
are not eligible for inclusion in the contest.
3. Entries must be documented. References to sources cited should
be properly cited.
4. Each entry must include an every-name index unless the pertinent
items contained therein are arranged in alphabetical order.
5. Entries will be judged on quality of content, scope and organization
of material, and clarity of presentation.
6. The decision of the judges will be final.
7. Entries for the contest for any given year must be mailed no
later than December 31 of that year to the Norris Harris Prize Contest,
Maryland Historical Society, 201 West Monument Street, Baltimore,
MD, 21201.
