Ways
to Help
The
H. Furlong Baldwin Library of the Maryland Historical Society depends
heavily on the generosity of history-minded donors, volunteers,
and interns. The MdHS is not, as many people assume, a state
institution. It receives virtually no government funding,
relying instead on endowment, contributions, and earned income.
We are a great bargain for the state of Maryland, preserving the
history of the state and its people and costing the taxpayers very
little!
Here
are ways you can help:
Volunteer
Intern
Donate
Books
Personal
or family papers
Business
or organizational records
Photographs
Genealogical
research
Home
movies and other moving images
Maps,
prints, and ephemera
The
MdHS is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax-deductible
to the extent allowed by law. MdHS staff, however, is not
allowed by IRS rules to appraise donations to establish their value.
The IRS requires that be done by independent appraisers hired by
the donor, if the donor is claiming a value of $5,000 or more.
If a donor is claiming a value below $5,000, the donor can estimate
the value but must be able to provide justification for the estimate,
such as what similar items have sold for at auction.
We
thank you for your kindness and support! Without your generosity,
the Library would not be able to acquire, preserve, and provide
access to our collections.
