Volunteer

The Library of Maryland History at the Maryland Historical Society needs you!  To volunteer, please fill out the volunteer form available at http://www.mdhs.org/involved_volunteer_app.html

We need volunteers for every task imaginable:

  • helping patrons at the reading room desks
  • retrieving and re-shelving materials
  • maintaining and adding to our website
  • cataloging books and other materials
  • answering research inquiries
  • working at the reception desk
  • processing manuscripts or photographs (arranging, describing, and housing them)
  • photocopying
  • researching building histories
  • processing genealogical research collections
  • re-housing collections (putting them in new folders and boxes)
  • maintaining databases
  • assisting with clerical duties
  • helping run our used bookstore
  • indexing newspapers

This list is not comprehensive.  If there is something you would like to do and it's not on the above list, please contact us at library_dept@mdhs.org and suggest it.

Volunteers are welcome to work on Tuesdays through Saturdays during the day.  We ask for at least a 2-hour time commitment per week.

Training will be provided, and you will earn our eternal gratitude!  You also will receive free membership in the MdHS, and you'll meet a wonderful group of people--the Library's staff and volunteers--who love history and genealogy.
