Interns
The
Library staff welcomes the opportunity to work with interns.
Some staff members actually began here as interns, so we understand
that an internship is supposed to be a learning experience.
We are committed to making your internship an educational experience
that will serve your academic and career needs. The work our
interns do is critical to the Library; it is not busy work!
To
apply for an internship, please fill out an intern application form
at http://www.mdhs.org/involved_intern_app.html
Please
note: The Library will accept applications at any time; you do not
have to meet the deadlines listed on the application page.
We
accept interns year-round. Interns may be undergraduate or
graduate students. While most of our interns are history or
library science majors, we also have had successful interns from
a variety of fields. We strive to match interns' assignments
with their interests. We will work with you to ensure that
your internship fulfills the requirements of your school for hours,
type of work, production of a written report or product, evaluation,
and whatever other requirements your school might have.
Among
the tasks which interns typically work on are:
- processing
of manuscript or photograph collections (arranging, describing,
and housing them)
- creating
subject guides (guides to the Library's resources in a specific
area, such as Civil War history or women's history)
- creating
abstracts and finding aids for oral history collections
- digitizing
photograph or other image collections
If
you have any questions about a possible internship, please feel
free to e-mail the Libray at library_dept@mdhs.org
and discuss what you'd like to do.
