Traveling Trunks

Large trunks filled with reproduction primary source artifacts and documents that travel to your classroom for a three-week rental. Also include lessons plans, activity suggestions, worksheets, and audiovisuals. Cost varies by trunk and includes return shipping*.

Colonial Maryland: Building the New World: Delve into life for colonial Marylanders in the 1600 and 1700s; students can try on clothes, handle objects, explore sights & sounds of early Maryland life with an emphasis on comparing the early and late colonial period and the various social classes (Grades 4&5) Cost: $115, includes return shipping

Revolutionary War Haversack: Be a soldier in the American Revolution; carry his haversack and explore the objects that he carried with him for day-to-day survival. (Grades 4&5) Cost: $85, includes return shipping

Growing Up in Maryland: Children’s life and experiences long ago through hands-on exploration of games, books, playthings, and pictures of daily life; a good introduction to the concept of the past (Grades PreK-3) Cost: $85, includes return shipping

Tools of the Historian: Learn how historians use primary sources, including documents, photographs, objects and oral histories to create a view of the past; kit includes archeological objects, maps, pictures, oral history recordings and more (Grades 4-12) Cost: $85, includes return shipping

A Stitch in Time: Quilts: Learn about a functional, everyday item that is not only an artistic expression but also a part of women’s history; includes books, slides and videos, sewing notions, quilt patterns and games and many images of quilts from different communities (Grades K-8) Cost: $85, includes return shipping

Maryland Indians: An investigation of the lives of Maryland’s Woodland Indians. Young students will love the "reader’s theatre" play about the natural world. Older students will become experts on Native American life, including ceremonies, foods, shelter, people and much more, by examining objects and learning from their peers. Use this trunk to teach about Native Americans in Maryland and reinforce reading & writing skills at the same time. All lessons correspond to state standards for social studies and for language arts. *Please note: The cost for teachers interested in picking up and dropping off trunks by hand at the museum is $40/trunk. Teachers on the Eastern Shore may pick up and drop off the Growing Up in Maryland, A Stitch in Time: Quilts, and Tools of the Historian trunks from the Historical Society of Talbot County for the $40 fee. Call the Maryland Historical Society to reserve your trunk.
