School Tours

Enrich your students’ study of history with a visit to the Maryland Historical Society. Interactive tours, led by trained museum teachers, focus on specific objects in the collection. All tours are designed to address the Maryland State Social Studies curriculum.

Some scholarships may be available to help cover the cost of tours and workshops. If your school needs assistance to be able to visit the Maryland Historical Society, please call us for details at 410-685-3750 ext. 334.


Fees:

$3 per student. One free adult admission for every 10 students, $3 for each additional adult.

Time:

Tours are scheduled throughout the week and last one hour.

Lunches:

A student lunchroom is available for eating bag lunches.

Group Size:

Minimum of 10 students, maximum of 75 students

Preschool Program: Who Lives in a History Museum? (ages 4 & 5) Follow Nipper, the RCA dog, through the MdHS, learning about the past as seen in a history museum; designed especially for preschoolers and includes a craft activity. ($4 per student)

In Olden Times (Grades K - 3) A look at children’s life and experiences long ago through hands-on exploration of work activities, play time and family life. Pre-visit Lesson for In Olden Times

 

Tom Miller: Baltimore Student, Baltimore Artist (Grades K - 3)

An examination of the life and distinctive work of Baltimore artist Tom Miller; includes a reading of Can a Coal Scuttle Fly?, his biography written for children, and an opportunity to creat a "found art" piece in Miller's style ($4/student, requires two hours with craft activity.

 

Lord Baltimore’s Colony (Grades 4 - 5) From the founding of Maryland to the fight for independence; an exploration of how the colonists’ desire for a better life affected experiences for Europeans, African Americans, and Native Americans in early Maryland.

African Americans in Maryland (Grades 4 - 12) A celebration of the well-known figures and the unsung heroes who represent African American Marylanders’ contributions to history & culture.

The World of Charlotte Doyle (Grades 5-8) Come explore the world of Charlotte Doyle in the MdHS’s new maritime exhibit.  Students will learn about trade, shipbuilding, the experiences of African American seamen, and privateers!  Tour includes short reading elements from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi and from MdHS primary source material.

The Calvert Legacy (Grades 4 - 12) The legacy of Maryland’s Catholic settlers and the important contributions of Catholics to the development of the state. Developed with funding from the Knott Foundation.

The Hunt for History (Grades 4-12) Maryland’s place in the American historical & cultural landscape from the founding of the colony through the twentieth century; a great overview of Maryland history for older students. Pre-visit Lesson for Hunt for History

 

Blue or Gray? (Grades 6 - 12) Examine Maryland events prior to and during the Civil War to decide if Maryland was a more Northern or Southern leaning state; learn about the economic, social and political division within Maryland during the Civil War era.

Maryland’s Immigrant History (Grades 8-12) Explore the stories of immigration to Maryland from the colonial period through the turn of the 20th century, with an emphasis on German and Irish immigration in the mid 19th century.
