Ms. White sorts these ladies into categories according to their appeal to men—whether as goddess types, companions, sex kittens, competitors or mother figures. Mini case studies on diverse figures such as Alma Mahler, Josephine Baker, Mata Hari, Jacqueline Kennedy, Eva Peron and Baltimore’s own Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, White analyzes just how they achieved their appeal. On view that day only, the bolero, skirt and hot pants outfit designed by Madame Gres for the Duchess of Windsor.
