Chief Development Officer

The Maryland Historical Society (MdHS), the state's oldest continually operating cultural institution, contains one of the most extensive collections of Americana in the world. With over 50,000 objects and seven million books and documents, the MdHS mission is to illuminate the past, lend perspective to the present and inform the future through an extensive collection that forms the fabric of Maryland history. In fy2007, through its education programs, the MdHS served more than 93,000 schoolchildren, providing critical support to both the students and teachers throughout Maryland. MdHS is the seventh largest arts organization in the Baltimore area and one of the major history museums in the mid-Atlantic region.

MdHS currently seeks a Chief Development Officer to raise public and private resources and funds necessary for the operation of the organization. Reporting to the Director of the Society and working with the Board of Trustees and the staff management team, this position will oversee all fundraising, membership, merchandising, licensing, partnerships, community outreach, special events and public relations. The CDO manages a staff of five. At least five years of multifaceted development work with a proven record of fundraising success and a bachelor's degree are required.

Part-Time Hilgenberg Project Manager

The Maryland Historical Society (MdHS) seeks a part-time Project Manager to be responsible for creating and managing the Charles Edward Hilgenberg Archive of their H. Furlong Baldwin Library. The initial goal of this archive is identify, catalog and make available for research, the Deutsche Correspondent holdings of the MdHS library. Further, MdHS considers this project an excellent opportunity to share additional German materials in the MdHS collections and to create connections with the German heritage resources throughout Maryland. Such an important and valuable resource can expand our connections to and among groups and individuals interested in Maryland’s German heritage.

Required skills: Specific knowledge of digitizing library collections, experience identifying and working with appropriate vendors, and experience inventorying, packaging and shipping library collections. Ability to explore fee-for-access or third-party licensing of the online archives; develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of these options; identify audiences for the resource; and make recommendations to MdHS and the Hilgenberg Family Foundation. Proficiency with the German language in its written form. Excellent writing skills and successful grant writing experience. Strong public speaking skills with the ability to write and present archival information, organize annual open house events and be the spokesperson for the Hilgenberg Archive. Research skills to identify – at MdHS and throughout Maryland – appropriate related projects, with the goal of expanding the project to include additional collections and programming during years three, four and five. Applied working knowledge of varied computer software packages including the Microsoft Office suite of applications, demonstrated ability to supervise interns and volunteers, multi-task, be organized and flexible, work within a team environment, meet deadlines and prioritize job responsibilities.

Successful candidate must have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in history, or degree in a related applicable field, with archival coursework, or a graduate degree in library science/archives.
